Exploring Metaphors in Poetry

January 2021, Year 4, age 8

HB had been enjoying reading poetry books so we decided to look in more detail at the figurative language poets sometimes employ. I explained what a metaphor is and we read 'What is the Sun?' by Wes Magee. It uses a series of metaphors to describe the sun. We then read 'The Night is a Big Black Cat' by G. Orr Clark, which uses an extended metaphor to describe the night. HB then went out for a scooter ride and came back having composed this poem:

The next day we discussed how metaphors can be used to provoke different responses in the reader. I suggested HB could write two poems that describe the same location but use metaphors to make that place seem very different. HB took me up on the challenge and produced this poem about a spooky forest and a fantastical forest.
