Celtic Harmony Stone Age Day

March 2016, Preschool Year, age 4

Celtic Harmony Camp

This was the second home-ed group visit and first all day event we attended. The sessions are usually aimed at older children, but a last minute place became available, so we decided to give it a go.

The day began in the roundhouse with a fire lighting demonstration. The children were then split by ages. Our group crept up on our prey (a hessian bag representing a boar) and HB threw a wooden spear at it.

Next it was time to gather some food (in the form of wooden pictures and wooden playfood). The group leader talked us through the food we had gathered, including the fact that some of us had gathered something poisonous!

The group leader then gave a talk about stone age herbs and medicine. HB ground up some herbs.

Next the children worked in small groups to build a shelter from twigs. I suspect real Paleolithic people would have created something a little more impressive, but a good time was had by all.

Trading Game Making an arrowhead

After lunch the children took part in a trading game. They were given an object or objects worth 3 points and had to trade with others. HB ended up with more points by the end of the trades as some people hadn't quite worked out what they were doing and happily traded their 3 point good for one of his 1 point items!

Finally we were shown some replica stone age tools and HB carved an arrow head from soap.
