Brading Roman Villa

November 2017, Year 1 (age 5)

Several Roman buildings were found on the site. The original villa dated from the mid first century with the remains on display at the museum being from the 4th century villa. On arrival we were given a brief description of the different rooms and told that much of the evidence was lost when the Victorians excavated.

The villa floors had many mosaics, the unusual chicken headed person is unique to this building, whilst the astronomer is the only example in the UK.

Some of the artefacts found had been thrown into the well. HB explored the different layers that archaeologists dug through.

Outside, the position of the large farm building was mapped out on the floor using pebbles. Inside the museum we had watched a CGI film showing what the building may have looked like, so we tried to imagine it. We also saw part of the hypocaust.
