Viking Trade Session

November 2018, Year 2 (age 6)

Our third Viking session focussed on trade. I began with a few words about the length and scale of the trade roots, and the divisions within Viking society. I mentioned how important the slave trade was to the Viking economy and those children who wanted to pretended to auction off their slave (aka parent). I was sold for 4 silver coins!

Designing a Coin

I explained how a coin would really have been minted (which unfortunately we couldn't attempt), but also that craftsman would have etched designs onto metal when making jewellery. After looking at the designs on real Viking coins, the children then etched their own coin design onto a disc and turned it into a pendant.

Making a Money Bag

They used a wooden hammer, metal leather working tool, and faux leather to create their own coin bag. Since HB had already made one when we were in Denmark, my child decided to sit this activity out.

Constructing a Balance

Viking traders needed to be able to measure silver precisely so our traders made their own balance.

Selling Wares at Coppergate

I set up two Viking market stalls and gave out replica Viking coins for a bit of Viking town role play.

Journeying to Distant Lands To Buy and Sell

hunting for trade goods   hunting for trade goods   hunting for trade goods

I gave each child a map of the park with country's superimposed onto it and a list of items they needed to buy and sell at each location. (So for example they might visit England to collect slaves and then 'sail' to Turkey to purchase silk and spices.) The children had to hunt for the right trade good in the right location to complete their journey.

At the end of the session I continued my saga, once again leaving the tale at a cliff hanger. (Aren't I mean?!) I had a shocking sore throat on this day, so it was actually pretty tricky to 'perform' the story, but I just about managed it!
