The session began with a discussion of what DNA was. The children then worked in pairs to build a foam DNA strand, matching up the correct bases.
Next HB extracted DNA from strawberries.
The final part of the session demonstrated that different people are able to detect different tastes due to their varying genetic make up. A few foods were sampled by those who wanted to eat them, then participants put three impregnated pieces of paper on their tongue to see if they could taste anything. HB could taste both the PTC and the Sodium Benzoate (the other piece of paper was the control).
