Herrings Green Farm held a falconry day for home educated students. They began by holding two owls and learning facts about them, including how to tell whether an owl is diurnal, noctural or crepuscular. At the end of this part of the session they were quizzed to see what they could remember.
Next they were taught a little about how a bird flies, including the name for different feathers and which birds have a long, short or broad wing. They each got to fly a barn owl.
Before breaking for lunch they learnt how to tie a falconer's knot, why astroturf is added to the stands, and some falconer's vocabulary.
After lunch they took a Harris Hawk for a walk, learning how these birds were used to catch things like rabbits for their owners.
In the final section of the day they were taught about different types of eagles. HB held a Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle and met a Bald Eagle.
