500BC Session in Wendover Woods

November 2017, Year 1, age 5

The group leader discussed different fire lighting methods from prehistory. HB tried using a bow drill and rock bashing technique to generate sparks.

The children then had the chance to use a modern, metal tool to generate sparks in a similar fashion. They found this much easier!

They cooked baked potatoes on the fire. Everyone worked in small groups to design a way to cook the popcorn from a selection of everyday items. (Not very prehistoric, but a fun team building activity!)

When they'd finished eating the children worked together to construct a shelter, and then climbed trees.

At the end of the session they chose a leaf and covered it in wax to preserve it. We then went to the cafe to warm up with some hot chocolate!
