Really Roman Day at Peterborough Museum

September 2019, Year 3 (age 7)

The first challenge of the day was to tie a toga. Only the male elite wore toga's and for the rest of the morning HB's group were to be slaves, so HB removed the toga and dressed as a slave. Their group had to find a list of objects in the museum for a banquet at Castor Palace.

Next they visited the Durobrivae market. They had to use the correct money to pay for their goods and make sure the sneaky shop keeper didn't give them the wrong change.

Then it was time for the slaves to do some cooking. (HB - don't get caught lazing around or you'll be in trouble!)

Next they became pottery apprentices. After looking at example faces on Roman pottery, they created their own.

After lunch the children handled pieces of Roman pottery and thought about what the remains tells us about Roman society.

At the end of the day HB enjoyed an excellent session on Roman medicine - the highlight of the day. We learnt that there were female physicians.

Poor HB needed some Roman dental surgery. Still, it could have been worse - at least the physician didn't suggest trepanning!
