Minibeasts Session at Daws Hall Nature Reserve

April 2022, Year 5, age 10

On arrival we looked at the moths that had been caught in a moth trap.

Next we used sweep nets to catch insects. We used a minibeast identification key to identify our finds. Our favourite was the Orb spider.

We then held a flat net under an oak tree (and later a cherry tree) and shook a branch over it. We discovered that lots of different minibeasts live in trees, especially oak trees.

Towards the end of the session we looked for minibeasts under logs (and other things). We found a slow worm, beetles, slugs, woodlice, and even a baby newt.
