Awesome Archaeology day at Flag Fen

July 2017, Reception Year, age 5

Flag Fen is a bronze age site around 3300 years old. It is home to a long, wooden, causeway and platform that have been unusually well preserved in the wetland.

We took a very interesting guided tour of the site. We saw some of the deliberately damaged objects that were thrown into the water, presumably as offerings. HB learnt that the site was so well preserved due to the lack of oxygen in the water logged soil, which stopped the wood from rotting away. HB also learnt that bronze age sheep were plucked rather than shorn.

Next we visited a recreated Bronze Age Roundhouse. HB learnt that they had turf roofs and was helped to dye a piece of cloth blue.

We saw bronze age log boats that came from the Must Farm site and HB sat in a replica.

Next we took a trip to the object handling tent. HB learnt that most bronze age clothing seems to have been made from nettle yarn.

After this we went to the dig pits. Finds were uncovered (mostly pottery) and then a key was used to guess their age.

In the Education Centre HB made a mini paper Bronze Age roundhouse.

Finally HB looked at the displays and pretended to be a bronze age person.
